Due to being an absolute car fanatic, I'm basing my undergraduate marketing dissertation on the automotive industry. I'm attempting to uncover the psychological factors underpinning car purchases, and would really appreciate 3-4 minutes of anybody's time to fill out my questionnaire:
Don't see this as spamming or advertising - I'm posting on here with a view to sharing any key findings on this forum and with any poster should they request. But with that said, I would appreciate you contributing to (and thus enriching) my research.

Hi All

I am trying to raise awareness of an up and coming young driver.

LEWIS WILLIAMSON for the Autosport Rookie of the Year award!

For those of you that are unaware Lewis won the BRDC McLaren Autosport Driver of the Year award in 2010 and has been racing in GP3 this season.

Lewis ‘works’ at Ross-shire Engineering and is living between Dingwall & Golspie at the moment (not quite Monaco ).

In his first season in GP3 he topped the time sheets in pre-season testing outstripping all other 29 drivers in the field and after an unfortunate end to his first race in the series (he rolled)
and a memorable win at Silverstone he was sitting second in the Championship mid-way through the season.

However, lady luck was not on his side and after a series of mechanical failures and set up issues ended the season in joint 7th,on points, out of an impressive field of 30 drivers.

Please vote for him - never know in a year or two you might see him racing with the likes of Vettel and Alonso!!!

Please Forward this on to as many people as you can.
The voting is on the Autosport website or just follow this link.

Hi all,

I'm in a bit of a tight spot with repairs on my car and wondered if anyone had been in the same situation or any ideas what I should do?

So I left my car with a Seat dealership for a diagnostic test to find out what was the cause of my engine management light coming on intermittently, although at the time I left my car the light was not on.

After leaving the car with them for just over a hour I received a phone call from a member of staff stating that the timing chain had jumped and the car would no longer start. Feeling I had no choice I agreed to have the engine stripped (on the advice of the service advisor) to try and diagnose the fault.

The next day I received a phone call to say they needed to remove the cylinder head to inspect for further damage, being told this would cost an additional £147 on top of the work that they had already carried out at the cost of £107 totalling £254! I didn't agree to this and sent an email to the general manager, service manager and head office as I thought this was crazy after my car was in working order.

Since the service manager has liaised with me and taken the cylinder head head off and after further inspection I need a new cylinder head and the intermittent engine management light was related to the cause of the jump in the testing. They say with all the labour and parts it comes to £2400 but will go 50/50 with me because it happened in there garage.

So now I'm left facing a £1200 bill, is this fair? Or are they pulling a fast one and what can I do?

Please if anyone can advise I'd really appreciate it.

As you may know there is a clause in a bill before parliament at the moment that seems to be going unchallenged.

Part 3, Chapter 2, Clause 56 of The Protection of Freedoms is designed to make the registered keeper liable for any private parking fines where it is not possible to identify the driver responsible for the parking infringement. This clause has the backing of, and heavy lobbying from, the British Parking Association due to the revenue stream it will generate for its members.

The premis of innocent until proven guilty will be removed from a purely civil matter using heavy handed criminal powers. This can not go unchallenged anymore.

More information on this clause can be got from http://www.stopclause56.org.uk

There is an e-petition where we can voice our object to this heavy handed clause.

Cooling Problem

Hi all.

My wife's car is a 1.4 VVTI (Year 2000). It is now 11 years old and so I thought it prudent to change the coolant.

I followed the Haynes manual and drained using the radiator plug and also using the tap at the rear of the engine block. The old coolant looked clear and so I have no reason to believe that corrosion has occured.

I refilled the engine (without flushing) by pouring the antifreeze and water into the radiator and all seemed well. The manual says that it should take 6 litres however I suspect it took more like 5 litres (including the reservoir).

I pinched the hoses during the filling process to expel air. The problem is that the bottom hose (outlet) is stone cold while the upper hose (inlet gets hot). I have read that this is a common problem although there appears to be many causes. The water is circulating around the heater matrix, and the temp gauge is indicating normal. This was after a 7 mile run in warm weather.

I appreciate that the bottom hose should be cooler than the upper hose but not stone cold surely? I drained the coolant out again and refilled and I now have an air lock in the heater matrix and still the bottom hose is cold.

I plan now to do the following when it stops raining:

1) Put some ramps under the front wheels and remove the under cover to gain access to the bottom radiator hose.

2) Remove the thermostat and check it's operation.

3) Flush the radiator using a garden hose and flush through the engine with the thermostat removed.

4) Refill with the car on ramps which should help to expel the air.

What I cannot understand is why the water was not boiling off and the gauge was reading normal with no circulation through the radiator?

Any suggestions/comments please?

My 2007 Toyota Verso T180 Diesel 2.2 is losing power. When pulling away from junctions the bite just isnt there anymore, I hadnt really noticed this so much until towing a caravan. The caravan is well within all the weight limits etc and always towed well in the past however this time after about a 40 mile tow it lost all power. You can restart the car and all is well for about 3-4 mins etc. Taking the caravan off the car works ok again. Its been suggested a diesel filter may be blocked or blocking and is usually cleaned as part of a service but Im not a petrol head so clueless.
Question is what do you guys think the issue could be as I cant prove the fault to a garage easily and im out of warranty and find the Toyota dealerships hard going especially as i have the D-Cat model which Toyota refuse to believe has appaling fuel consumption and almost half the brochure quotes!
